She listened to him but she somehow couldnt believe it. Because that would mean that he broke his promise. But he had done that anyway, hadnt he? She looked up into the ceiling, hearing the man shuffle around. She turned her head to look at him, lifting the device to breathe from but her eyes didnt linger. "Lucky him." she muttered, closing her eyes as she felt quite famished and hungry. She had just been working on her gadgets, which showed all around quite obviously.
The man spoke and seemed to halt his words, making Jane frown a bit as she sighed in contemplation. "No. You cant." she said, turning her legs, sliding off the hammock to land on the floor on both her feet. She looked at him, shifting between his eyes. "You can tell him I'm sorry though." she said, sending him a smile that didnt reach her eyes as she moved over to the door, grabbing a bag on the table on the way, her breathing device she placed in her belt.

He scoffed at her mutter, watching as she landed on the floor in front of him. Sighing, poor girl, but he had given her a chance. "How about some food then?" he asked, sitting down on the bed, turning the prism in his hand. "And perhaps a chance at getting out of here?" he suggested, digging in to his pocket and taking out a small bar of chocolate, just like the one she always used to get in her bag of food when she headed back to her hideout. He held it out to her, "I'm stuck in healing him," he confessed him, "he's stable for now, but I'm afraid that once winter starts up again I might risk losing him." It was an honest thing he feared.
If for some reason she had decided to stay and listen to him he would send her a small smile. "All he does is sit inside all day, read, study, create ... Is that really all the life I can offer him?" before he shook his head, "sorry, I guess I had hopes that seeing you would make him feel better."

"Food?" she repeated, looking at him as she swung the bag over her shoulder. The addition made her scoff. "I am fine here. I have been doing well for myself, all thanks to these." she said, gesturing around the floor. Wasnt it obvious that she wasnt really struggling that bad? Many others had it worse, far worse. She looked at the chocolate bar as he held it out, frowning a little. "I lost a tooth from all that chocolate." she said, opening her mouth and pulling her cheek a little to show a missing tooth in her cheek.
The talk of winter made her sigh. She stood for a bit at the door, frowning to herself as she was staring at the door. She could go and get on with her day, or stay. Somehow she chose the latter, dropping the bag next to the door. She went over to the middle of the room where there seemed to be an empty spot, sitting down like she was meant to be sitting there. "I think you're wrong." because how could he? She wasnt the same anymore, she was different, picking up a little device on the floor that she clicked. It activated something that seemingly released something, only that she hadnt filled it yet. She put it down and picked up something else. "He gave me that stone. It's mine." she said as she looked at him, clearly not wanting to lose it.

Dexter chuckled as she showed off her missing tooth, because to him she hadn't changed that much. She was still a kid in many ways and it showed in how she moved around. Her arms dangling and her steps light as if she was playing. "Maybe I am wrong, but I wouldn't know it for sure until I have tested it out," he said. She must knew how that felt, trying different solutions until something worked. Her tinkering sure showed her many aspects. She mentioned the prism and he sighed, looking at it, "well I think you're wrong," he smiled tossing the stone to her, deciding to open up the chocolate bar, breaking off a piece that he chewed on for a while.
"I don't think you're doing good here at all; I think you are dying because of the fumes that are surrounding us even in this old house," he said in a small ponder. It would be alright for him to stay a little while, but as soon as he got out of this place he needed to get his lungs cleared out. "I think you are lonely, that you miss having someone to come to when you were hungry and dirty."

She grabbed the prism, inspecting it before putting it in her pocket, her attention returning to whatever was in her hand. She seemingly didnt pay attention, but fact was that she was. She was listening, feeling her jaw tense a little. The fumes werent bad for her, she couldnt believe that. And besides, she had just made her new device! She would be fine, couldnt he see that! Though then he mentioned something that made her blood boil. She crushed the thing in her but she chuckled. Like he had just made a joke, that his words barely touched her. "You left me!" she chuckled, though she smiled, she was grinding her teeth as well, just ripping apart what she had spent so long creating. She threw it to the side of the room, grabbing another item that she tinkered with rather aggressively. "Everyone leaves! You, Eugene. Even Winston!" she yelled, still chuckling but tears formed in her eyes as well. "It's a funny story with Winston. Three years ago, when the fumes were getting worse, people were so angry all the time. I got to watch some random dude bash in Winston's head like squeezing a watermelon. Pop." she said, popping her lips like she recreated the sound she had heard.

Everyone had left her, and he couldn't blame her for the anger, but to him it wasn't productive. She had seemingly tried to focus on her work, but right now she was showing cracks. Cracks that Dexter knew how to exploit if he said the right thing. He watched her tinker, speaking of how Winston had gotten killed and he sighed, getting to his feet. "Alright, if you want to stay here you can ... But we never left you, not really," he said, looking at her as she was sitting on the floor with tears in her eyes. He reached his hand down to her, "we were with you all this time, in our thoughts, in our prayers," yes, she had made this old scientist pray for her, "Eugene still has that boat you made; Tinkers with it constantly, wanting it to be perfect for when he gets to see you again." It wasn't a lie. "Come home, clever girl, we miss you," his hand still held out for her to take if she wanted to.

He got to his feet and she thought that would be it. He would just go now and she would be alone again. But then he spoke and her jaw trembled as she listened to him. They had prayed for her? What a weird thing to do. She scraped her gadget with her fingernail, looking at it. The mention of the boat made her look up with vulnerable eyes. So that was why she hadnt been able to find it. She looked at his hand, sobbing, though she was also fighting it, almost choking on them if she had to. But eventually she reached up and grabbed his hand. She didnt want to be here alone anymore. He however had one thing wrong in all he had said. She had never cared if she was hungry or dirty. She just wanted someone to care. Her sobs got worse and eventually she bawled, crying her heart out.

She started crying and he pulled her in to his embrace, letting her sob and cry all she needed to. Once she had calmed down somewhat he took her with him. Of course he knew he she was on Samuel's list, but for now he wouldn't want to hand her over. She was a smart girl, and she could be useful in Eugene's recovery. Arriving at their new little house in South, he opened the door for her, letting her go in and explore. Dexter said he still had some unfinished business to take care of, so he told her where Eugene's room were before he left.
Eugene had fallen asleep on his bed, resting as his body was always more tired than he wanted it to seem like. He barely heard the door downstairs open, laying on his back as it wouldn't constrict his breathing. The boat had been through a lot, but it was still in decent shape for the scrap it had been made out of. The little motor still getting check up every week.

He hugged her close and it helped her cry it out rather fast. She couldnt help it, she just needed to feel that someone, anyone cared enough and a hug was her equivalent of showing it. She calmed down after a while, only making small sobs here and there, drying her face off in her sleeve. She had tears and a bit of drooling going on but she was so aware of it that she could remove it with her sleeves rather quick. She followed his lead out of the little house and out of The Blocks. She remembered South, but not this empty and seemingly ridden of life. Sure some people still seemed to live here and go on with their daily life but it was not like it had been when she was a kid.
Dexter let her in and she looked around for a bit, thinking it didnt look too different from the old one. Like it was almost some attempt at a replica. She hummed as he mentioned unfinished business, nodding as he gave the directions for Eugene’s room. Her heart felt a little heavy as she went to the door. She opened it carefully, seeing him lay there, he looked so different and yet the same. At least she could recognize his features. She carefully went over to sit down next to the bed, placing her chin on the mattress as she looked at him like she had when they were kids. How she would wait till he looked just to make a silly face at him and see that tired smile he could make. She looked to his hand moving her own over to poke his fingers like she did back then to wake him up. She usually warned him as well while she did it. “Careful… bed bugs love sausages and your fingers look just like them!” She whispered to herself in a lighter tone to sound like her kid self as she grabbed his index in a pinching grip, though she wasnt hurting him, no she couldnt hurt him.

Eugene had grown a lot. While his features were the same, it was certain he was no mere boy anymore. No, he was slowly becoming a man and leaving childhood behind, whatever that meant. He sorta heard his door open, but in his subconscious it was just his father checking up on him. That was until he felt the fingers pinching his, turning his head as he opened his eyes slowly. Despite his frail disposition, he had grown up to be rather handsome, if you disregarded the fact that he still had
to walk around with a cane. His eyes lit up as he realized who it was, looking at her with a soft smile. "You," he whispered, his heart skipping a slight beat but promptly resumed. Was he sleeping? He reached out, touching her hair like he had went they were kids, pulling a bit at her bangs before a soft chuckle escaped if she reacted.
"You're really here," he said perplexed, sitting up with a bit of struggle, letting his back rest against the headboard on his bed. His hand moved down, taking hers, touching it and feeling how skinny she was. He pulled at her lightly, wanting her to come closer and if she did he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her down on top of him as he buried his face in her hair. His shoulders trembled, feeling so happy to see her. His loneliness disappearing in an instant because she was actually right here in his arms. "I've missed you," his voice muddled by her hair, but still audible.

He looked at her and somehow he was just so pretty. She had thought so when they were kids too but now they were older. His whisper made her scoff, looking down as she felt her cheeks turn red with the happy feeling inside of her. He touched her hair and it felt nice until he pulled at her bangs making her chuckle with a soft ow leaving her lips. “That or your medication is doing a pretty good job.” She joked, looking at him again. Wow, he was handsome. She had seen a few handsome guys, but none like him. The others were rougher in the features, his was delicate and nice, fitting him perfectly.
He touched her hand and she let him, though when he pulled at her she worried. “I’m not as light as I look.” She said but he was adamant and she gave in. She hugged herself close to him, drawing in a deep breath of content. He said he missed her and she hummed, moving away to look up at him. “Your dad said you were dying. Why would you do that? You promised.” She reminded him, her eyes turning a little sad. Her own breath had a slight rasp to it, like a faint whistle noise whenever she was pushing out the last bit of air. It wasnt too noticeable at this point, only with a good ear.

Forgotten childhood memories - Page 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Forgotten childhood memories   Forgotten childhood memories - Page 3 EmptyFri Nov 26, 2021 12:18 am

She returned the hug, and feeling her whole weight on him wasn't too bad. In fact he had longed to just be close to someone. It felt like time hadn't really passed at all, sitting here with her like they were kids. They used to have a whole ordeal of rituals to do before she headed home each evening which included at least a half dozen hugs. She moved away, looking at him and he looked back at her, smiling like he felt he hadn't in years. Then she asked about the dying part and he sighed, moving some of her choppy hair out of her eyes. "I know I promised, but the doctors said I wouldn't live till I was 10 and look at me now," he said. It was really a miracle, he coughed softly, nothing too worrying yet. He could hear the whistle in her breath, looking at her before he pressed his ear to her chest, listening to her lungs. If this kid knew something, it was lungs, and hers weren't in the best of shape. Though maybe they just needed to bounce back from the chemical fumes.
"Besides, I'm not dead yet - or maybe we are both dead?" he pondered, pulling away to look at her. Lifting his hands he cupped her face, taking in her features. She had grown so much, but he could still remember the toothless kid she used to be. "I'm here now; I'm so sorry that I didn't tell you, but everything happened so fast," he shook his head, knowing it wasn't an excuse, "I'm sorry."

She didnt really trust doctors so him living past what they had predicted only made her think of them as liars. And she really didnt like liars at all. He coughed and she frowned a little worried. Though as he pressed his head to her chest, she didnt quite understand why. But she let him listen either way. “If we’re both dead, then this shouldnt hurt.” She said, pinching his chest lightly but also enough for him to feel it. She chuckled and shook her head. No they werent dead. She would know.
He cupped her face and she looked at him, frowning a little as he began apologizing. She looked away and sighed. “You can make it up to me by showing me the boat. Has Captain Bottles been allowed to venture out on new adventures?” She asked, looking around but not moving her head too much if he still held it. And if he did, she would lean in towards one of his hands. The contact felt quite nice.

She was every bit as breathtaking now as she had been when they were kids. The mention of the boat made him chuckle, releasing her face and pointing to the window where the boat sat proudly, looking out over the streets. "He hasn't been on many adventures lately," he said a little saddened by that fact, if she went over to grab it and brought it back he would've made room for her on the bed, letting her be by the wall like she had used to be. He pointed at the different parts that he had added and fiddled with, even given him new paint every once in a while. "I've added a small motor - my own creation - it is fueled by the water it scoops in, running it through a small turbine that ends up shooting it out, propelling it forward," he explained. It was on a small scale on a toy, so it was just something he had tried for fun. "I've even added space for cargo, so that the weight can be adjusted more precisely," showing her how to pop open the small lid underneath where Captain Bottles was stationed. Looking at it brought him so many memories. It had been the toy he had never been able to let go of.

“But has he been on one?” She asked with her brow raised like she needed to know that he at least once had gotten to feel the waters around his boat since she saved him from sewer water. They had gone out a few times after, but it wasnt often it had rained enough for the boat to go along. She grabbed the boat and came back, lying down next to him, chuckling as they werent so small as they had been as kids. Before she had been able to lie next to him and still have some space, now they were almost shoulder to shoulder. She however didnt mind. She looked on as he showed her the upgrades, frowning a little surprised at how well he had taken care of it. “The weight is important so it doesnt just tip over.”  She said like she was reminding herself.
She turned her eyes to him, looking at his face for a bit, leaning her head onto his shoulder. “I’m glad you’re back.” She said truthfully. There werent people who had been as kind as him. She had looked. And she had looked long. Then she remembered, reaching down to her pocket, pulling out the prism, showing that she still had it. Then she frowned as she seemed to remember something. “Oh shit… I’ve forgotten something super important in my hideout.” She groaned, grabbing the homemade inhaler that she used to clear her lungs from the lingering chemicals. It wasnt a permanent solution but it felt like it helped.

"Oh he has been on many adventures; Dad even took me out to a real big lake to test him on the waters there," he smiled at the memory. It had been on a sunny day and his father and him had gotten a small taste of what life could've been if he had been a normal kid. "But I don't think any adventure is going to match up to the first he had," he chuckled, feeling her lean against him. It felt so good. Just having her here by his side was enough to make him feel more energetic.
Her words just seemed to be what he needed to hear, smiling in surprise as she had kept the prism. She groaned and he looked at her as she took out her inhaler, frowning as he looked at it. "Don't go ... You just got here," he pleaded, taking her hand that wasn't holding the inhaler. His were a little cold, but he didn't let that stop him, holding her hand quite carefully. "I don't want you to leave me ever again," he said rather truthfully. He cared for her on a level that he hadn't cared for others before. Perhaps because he still struggled to make friends. She understood him, and having her here filled up that hole in his heart that had made him feel so empty for so long. "Whatever you left behind, we can make here ... We can create things together again," he said.

She chuckled softly as he explained that the boat had indeed been out. That made her happy to hear. The mention of the first venture made her scoff. “I scraped my knee on that fall.” She said, pulling up her loose pants leg to show a scar on her knee that did look old and shrunken. “But you didnt notice laying in that tub.” She chuckled, shaking the pants back in place with her leg, before she remembered the prism.
But thinking about all the colours it could make made her remember what she had left behind without a thought. His plea made her frown a bit. He took her hand and it was like they were kids again. “But I will have to leave…” she argued softly.
They werent just kids anymore. She couldnt just stay over all the time and leech off him and his father’s hospitality. She sighed, leaning in to connect their foreheads, closing her eyes. “I want to whistle but it’s not just something to be made. It’s a power source. And I spent many months on trying to get it.” She said, looking at him as their foreheads were still touching. “I would be sad if I lost it. And your home is here. While mine’s…. Still in The Blocks.” She said. It was the sad reality.

Eugene didn't want to her to leave, not when he finally had gotten her back. Her calling him his nickname made him smile a little sad. She mentioned a power source and that had his interest peaked. "Alright," he said letting go of her hand. "But I want you to come right back here and show me, and then I want to talk all night about what has happened while I've been gone," he said. "Please, Zippy, can you spare one night to be with me?"
He was so afraid that she would leave and he would get sick again like last time. Safe to say, he was terrified. He moved, touching her face, carefully looking at it. "I don't want to be alone anymore," he said, his voice trembling. Sure he had had his father, but that wasn't the loneliness that he meant. No, he needed his friend back, needed to hear of her crazy adventures. "Pinky promise?" He whispered, holding up his pinky finger. This time around it was him risking everything or so it felt like it.

The least she could do was come back. At least she thought so. But it didnt make things feel easier. Wanting to be there for him but also not discard her work completely. He called her by her nickname he had given her when they were children and she looked at him with vulnerable eyes. “Fine.” She said, switching between his blue eyes, looking at him.
He touched her face and she listened to him, hearing that tremble in his voice. They shared that want. To not just be alone and left to an empty feeling. He lifted his pinky and she looked down at it, unsure how to really react. They had only made one once before and it hurt when it was broken. So she knew it was serious. Her pinky joined his and she sighed. “I promise to never let you feel alone anymore.” She promised, squeezing his finger lightly.

She took his finger, making him a promise and he returned the favor, "I promise I'll always be there for you," he whispered, squeezing back before they had to do their countdown to let go. He watched as she got out of his bed, wondering if he had ever seen someone as beautiful as her actually wanting to be close to him. "Hurry back ... And be safe," he said, smiling at her as he moved to sit with his feet over the edge. He was still pretty scrawny, but his growth had luckily not been stunted. Looking at her he smiled, a real smile that he hadn't felt like he had in years.
As she left he would sit for a while on the bed, looking at the boat, touching where she had inspected it. She was really still alive? He felt so happy, but he could also see that the years hadn't been kind to her in the Blocks. He wanted to make up for it, make up for leaving, and so he pushed himself off the bed with the help of his cane. Walking over to his desk he sat down and got to drawing up an idea in his mind for when she would return.

The countdown was almost as important as the promise. Because if one let go before the other, that would feel like they were predicting who would break their promise first. She got out of bed, feeling her heart sink a little as it was time for her to go. He smiled at her in a way she didnt think someone had smiled at her and it made her hurry over to him, pressing her lips to his forehead but she breathed in his scent. To her that was better than kissing him, which she had done for fun while they were kids just to have him gag and tell her off. “Be back soon.” He mumbled against his skin before she hurried off.

Getting back to The Blocks, she stopped by the house to get her bag. But she knew she had to venture further in and now that she had been in South, she seemed to realize that something in the air made her lungs itch inside. She remembered what Eugene’s father had said about his lungs, and she wondered if this was somehow close to that. Probably not. She got back to her hideout, seeing the car that had only fallen apart further as the years had gone by. She went to her work desk, grabbing some drawings that she folded and put in the bag before she went to a little vessel-like thing that was emitting a beutiful light. She wrapped it up in a cloth and put it in the bag as well. She ran her fingers over some of the tools she had hanging, listening to them clank together. “Dont get stolen while I’m gone.” She whispered to them, chuckling softly before she went on her way with the bag, heading right back to Eugene like she had promised.

Eugene was a little surprised as she hurried to him, feeling her lips against his forehead, closing his eyes at her mumble. It was a strange feeling he felt when she did that, his whole body tingling slightly. Yeah, they weren't kids anymore. But he didn't really seem to mind her affection like he had back then. Hugging had always been alright, but he had felt the kissing was weird. Now it felt weird that he wanted to kiss her. She left and he felt his heart beat a little faster watching her go.

When she would return he would be sitting at his desk, drawing up some mock-up idea he had small hand written notes beside the drawing that explained everything. He grabbed his cane, standing up only to realize just how tall he had grown compared to her. "Wow, you got tiny," he said, reaching down to pull her in for a real hug. He couldn't explain why he was being so affectionate, but he blamed the fact that it had been a long time since he had seen her. "I drew you something ... Something that might be useful to you," he whispered in to her hair. She smelled weird. Not like she used to. He pulled out of the hug, limping over with his cane to grab the mock-up he had drawn, handing it to her. It was a modification of the inhaler she had made, one that could strap to her face like a mask and cover her nose and mouth. "If the fumes are really getting that bad, I want you to be safer down there," he explained himself. She knew how to read his drawings even without knowing how to read properly.

She got back fairly quickly, having run so fast that her lungs were wheezing just slightly. She went to his bedroom, standing in the doorframe, seeing him by his desk. It made her smile as she curiously looked at what he was doing, to then gasp as he got up. It felt like he was towering over her. “Well, it’s probably the fumes.” She muttered, not having a better comeback. She didnt know why she was tiny! She just was!
But she barely thought about that when he pulled her in for a hug, wrapping her arms around him. She wasnt the strongest, so she couldnt even really squeeze him. She was also malnourished, so it was partly why she hadnt grown nor stayed strong. She was lean from running around all the time but that hadnt been the same since the fumes got thicker.
Useful? He let go and her eyes followed as he went to grab what he had been working on. She put down the bag before she looked at the drawing, reading it carefully. “I like it. I brought my original sketch too. I’m trying to work my way around filtering the air but it’s not like I know how to do that.” She sighed, taking her bag to open and look into. She pulled out a few folded drawings that she just placed on his table. Then she grabbed the packed up power source. It was emitting light through the cloth now that it was out of the bag. “This is it.” She said, unpacking it carefully. If he tried to touch it she would smack his hand away, telling him that she didnt know if it was safe to touch with hands, even though she had done that.

She spoke about filtering the air and he hummed. He might have an idea for that, but he wanted to inspect her drawings first. She took them out, and he moved over to his desk, sitting down as he looked at the papers she placed down. Oh, this would be fairly easy, he thought to himself before she took out something quite different. He frowned, tilting his head as he reached out, wanting to touch it, only to get his hand smacked, "ow," he muttered, letting his hand fall down in to his lap. "Where did you get that?" he asked clearly curious as to the origin of this power source. It seemed too powerful to be something she had tinkered herself with the scraps in the Blocks.
He looked at her papers, grabbing a pen to add a few notes to it, drawing a small diagram to show a simple way to filter the air she could breathe in through the mask. "I've really missed your creations ... You always think out of the box," he said with a small smile, feeling almost nostalgic looking through her drawings.

Him not touching it was for his best, she used the cloth to protect her hands too. He asked about it and she frowned a little as it wasnt exactly a nice story. “I just got lucky.” She said, smiling a half smile at him. Though it wasnt exactly just luck. She packed it away and placed the cloth on the desk while he was reading through her work, leaning down to place her head on his shoulder, looking at him improving her ideas. They were good for each other like this, helping the other improve and do better. “Well having someone inside the box keeps my stuff from blowing up in my face.” She argued softly, leaning her head towards his.
